Unsettled Times

Commissioned by Vasily Popov. I wrote Unsettled Times following an intense period of study of polyrhythm for my beatbox concerto Migrations in Rhythm. It is an etude in rhythm and meter, that tries to capture a unmoored sensation common to contemporary life. Polyrhythmic structures create a kind of counterpoint between the different layers of the texture, which I conceived of as a sort of parallel to the polyphonic melodies of Bach's Cello Suites. Simultaneously there are constantly-shifting driving meters that propel the music across uneasy terrain.

Instrumentation: solo cello

Duration: 5'
