New Canzona for the Fiftieth Year

New Canzona for the Fiftieth Year is a brass quintet celebrating the 50th anniversary of the founding of Levine School of Music, where I am the Music Theory and Composition Chair. It was premiered at the 50th Anniversary Showcase concert on 5/30/2026.

Written in five-part polyphony, New Canzona draws inspiration from the textures, syncopated rhythms, and ceremonial grandeur of the late Renaissance composer Giovanni Gabrieli, who composed with such brilliance for brass ensembles. The work updates the canzona's melodic and harmonic language to speak to the present. In doing so, it attempts to honor what has been built over fifty years while anticipating what is still to come.

Duration: 3'

Instrumentation: 2 tpt, hn, tbn, and tba
