Tema e cadenze

Composed for the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble in 2010. The formal plan for the piece begins with a simple theme which is a series of shimmering harmonies shifting under a single repeated note. As the theme is restated and varied, each instrument in the ensemble takes a turn playing an elaborate cadenza. The schema then dissipates into a moment of quiet reflection.​
