Steps to the Cathedral for youth orchestra

Commission by the Youth Orchestra of Prince William County. While studying in Switzerland a few years ago, I took an impromptu trip to the city of Lausanne. Here, I discovered a great Gothic cathedral sitting atop a hill that overlooks the city. From the vantage point of the cathedral, one finds a spectacular view of Lake Geneva below. Steps to the Cathedral attempts to document this little trek of mine – depicting my impressions of the city and the cathedral, and my reflections on the past. Musically, I have represented this sense of ‘rising’ with continuously ascending melodic figures and instrumental textures that stack layer upon layer. The long pedal-point harmonies imitate the sound of the organ – the chimes and glockenspiel can be heard as church bells ringing in the distance.

Instrumentation: 2 fl, 2 ob, 2 cl, 2 bsn, 2 hn, 2 tpt, 2 tbn, timp, 4 perc, str
